Fisheries Alberta Act  (2000)

Under the British North America Act the responsibility for fish and fisheries was vested in the Federal Government. Today provincial governments have the “boots on the ground” to actively manage fish (i.e., fisheries officer and biologist), and the Federal Government passes legislation that sets catch limits and methods for fish capture along with other restrictions. The Alberta Fishery Regulations (1998) was made pursuant to the Federal Fisheries Act by the federal government and regulates sport and commercial fisheries in Alberta. The Fisheries Alberta Act does not regulate catch limits, restrictions, or fisheries in Alberta, rather this act regulates licensing and regulation of fish buyers and processors, aquaculture operations, and the appointment of fisheries officers for the administration of the Federal Fisheries Act.
